From September 14 to 18, 2026, the course “Ukraine, Palestine and Western Sahara: The Protection of the Environment in Times of Crisis” was held as part of the 2026 International Summer School at the University of Cádiz.

Organized by the Department of Public International Law of the University of Cádiz and coordinated by Prof. Olena Nihreieva, the course brought together 15 students from Germany, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Türkiye, and Tunisia.

The course aimed to provide students with a multidimensional understanding of environmental protection from the perspectives of different branches of international law both in peace- and wartime. It included a legal analysis of the current situations in Ukraine, Palestine, and Western Sahara, combining theoretical sessions on key areas of public international law—including international environmental law, the law of the sea, and international humanitarian law—with practical case studies.

These activities enabled participants to explore the challenges and complexities involved in applying international legal frameworks to environmental protection in situations of crisis.

Alongside 30 hours of in-person classes, participants took part in cultural activities organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization. These included a cycling tour of Cádiz, a ceramics workshop, and a dinner featuring a flamenco show, offering students an enriching experience that combined academic learning with cultural exchange.
