NEW COLLECTIVE PUBLICATION OF THE JEAN MONNET CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE: “INMIGRACIÓN Y DERECHOS HUMANOS EN LAS FRONTERAS EXTERIORES DEL SUR DE EUROPA” – “MIGRATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN EUROPE’S EXTERNAL BORDERS” 22 marzo 2022
The book “Inmigración y Derechos Humanos en las Fronteras Exteriores del Sur de Europa”, with contributions in English, French and Spanish, has been recently published by Editorial Dykinson of Madrid, under the direction of Dr Alejandro del Valle Gálvez, and the coordination of Lorena Calvo Mariscal, (University of Cadiz) and Rachid El Houdaïgui (University of Tangier).
This work, which is the culmination of one of the main objectives of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence “Migration and Human Rights in Europe’s External Borders”, gathers the academic contributions from Professors of International and European Law from Italy, Malta, Spain and Morocco, experts in migration and human rights areas, and research members of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and the International Relations and Migrations’ Master Degree.
The different approaches and perspectives provide an original comparative view of the evolution of governance and management of migration control and human rights at the southern border of Europe from both sides of the Mediterranean. During 2019 and 2020, Professors from the Universities of Cadiz and Granada (Spain), Abdelmalek Essaâdi and Mohamed VI (Morocco), Pisa and Naples “L’Orientale” (Italy), as well as the IMO Institute of International Maritime Law (Malta), took part in the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence’s International Conferences focused on areas such as Asylum and Refuge in International and European Law, Human Rights and Migration in the external southern borders of the EU and, in particular, in the Strait of Gibraltar Area. This new collective publication gathers the academic results of such an important Euro-Mediterranean forum.
This book responds to one of the objectives of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, granted by the European Commission to the University of Cádiz and the Area of International Law and International Relations of the University of Cadiz, and is led by Professor Alejandro del Valle Gálvez.
The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence Migration and Human Rights in Europe’s External Borders” (587177-EPP-1-2017-1-ESEPPJMO-CoE), is a transnational Center for training, research and scientific dissemination on migration, borders and human rights at the southern border of Europe and the Strait Area, in particular. The geographical area in which it is based, the southernmost province of Spain, allows it to analyse the realities of migration and the management of border control and cooperation with third countries in North Africa.
These objectives are structured in four fundamental axes: An Official Bilingual Master in International Relations and Migrations (International and European Studies) that opportunely converges the generality of the study of International Relations with the speciality of migrations and human rights; the celebration of International Conferences with Moroccan university students in Tangier-Tetouan; the dissemination of migration and human rights issues to civil society and students of pre-university education centres, and the organization of meetings and seminars with experts and NGOs to address the practical reality of immigration and international protection in Southern Europe..
